Organisation structure

This role sits within the central business development team. The post holder will report to the Senior Partnerships Manager and be part of a team focused on leading and supporting business development across the organisation.

The central business development team performs multiple functions to drive business development efforts at BBC Media Action. It provides targeted support to business development efforts, which can include leading on writing proposals and bid management; leading the development of multi-regional and global funding applications and bids including frameworks and strategic opportunities; furnishing the organisation with donor intelligence, tools and resources to support country teams to conduct business development; and cultivating and nurturing central relationships with key institutional funders and partners.

The Business Development and Partnerships Officer will report to the Senior Partnerships Manager and be part of a small team focused on new business opportunities across the organisation. This position will support BBC Media Action country teams to design and write successful proposals.

The post holder will be working on capability statements, new proposals and concept notes that are submitted to a variety of institutional donors (USAID, FCDO, EU, Sida, NORAD, private foundations, etc). In addition, they will work alongside the Senior Partnerships Manager to support internal teams in London and in country offices with the provision of timely and accurate information on new funding trends and funding opportunities.

Job specific responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Work with the Senior Partnerships Manager, to ensure that relevant teams have access to concise, pertinent and timely information on donors and funding opportunities.
  • Provide support, including bid coordination, to proposal submissions Work with the Team Assistant to coordinate the collation of organisational documentation necessary to comply with donor requirements at bid stage and support the development of organisational tools and records to manage this.
  • Oversee the Team Assistant in ensuring that organisational records and donor registrations on donor portals/websites are kept up to date. • Develop internally and externally facing business development resources, including print, audio/visual and online materials.
  • Support the Central Business Development team to gather business development intelligence, identify and contribute ideas to develop funding opportunities and to cultivate new funders and partners that fit the organisational strategy.
  • Field/respond to questions and requests from teams across the organisation, including country offices, related to business development.
  • Write, review and edit proposals and concept notes to donors, conducting basic desk research, document formatting, and the development of situation analysis, capacity statements, past performance references and any other proposal documents.

Knowledge, skills, training and experience Essential

  • At least 2 years of business development experience with institutional donors.
  • Experience in the international development sector.
  • Excellent English writing skills with analytical ability to summarise technical donor text into easy to read material.
  • Ability to both edit others’ writing and accept feedback.
  • Demonstrable prior experience with successful proposal writing including supporting proposal development processes from start to finish.
  • Able and willing to work well with a diverse range of colleagues to achieve ambitious fundraising targets.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Experience developing proposals, securing new business from donors (e.g. the European Union, USAID, FCDO or others) with an understanding of evaluation frameworks.
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build trusting, productive relationships
  • Able to work on own initiative, under pressure and to tight deadlines, with a creative approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to deal with multiple issues as they arise, remaining calm, flexible and effective.
  • Ability to work supportively and effectively in a team.
  • Computer literate - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and specialist software packages.

Desirable

  • Experience in media and communication for development.
  • Experience working with Salesforce
